Understanding and Working with Aphantasia: A Guide for Hypnotherapists with Debbie Waller

Debbie, an experienced hypnotherapist and hypnotherapy tutor, will be looking into the fascinating world of aphantasia – the inability to visualise or form mental images. We’ll start by exploring historical perspectives of aphantasia, tracing its roots in research and the various "cures" that have been attempted. We’ll move on to the recognition of aphantasia as a part of neurodiversity, highlighting the importance of embracing cognitive differences and improving inclusivity within therapeutic practices.
As someone who is aphantasic herself, Debbie will draw on both therapeutic and personal experience, ending with practical tips and techniques for effectively engaging with aphantasic clients.
By the end of this one-hour presentation, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of aphantasia, its historical context, and practical approaches for supporting clients with this particular form of neurodiversity within the realm of hypnotherapy.

Debbie Waller (she/her) is the Director and Head Trainer at Yorkshire Hypnotherapy and the author of books for hypnotherapists and hypnotherapy students: The Metaphor Toolbox, The Hypnotherapist's Companion and Their Worlds, Your Words. Her most recent book, Anxiety to Calm, is aimed at clients and co-written with her eldest, Rae (they/them). Debbie also has over twenty years in practice as a hypnotherapist, specialising in anxiety and stress disorders.
Debbie had no idea she was aphantasic until she undertook her hypnotherapy training and discovered that phrases like "I can see it in my mind" were literal for most people, rather than metaphorical. She says it led to a new level of self-understanding and is keen to share this with others.
